New Mangalore Port Unveils High‑Tech Security Tower and Logistics Upgrades

MANGALURU – On 28 June 2025, T K Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), officially inaugurated a state‑of‑the‑art Security Surveillance Tower at New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). Operating 24/7, the tower features drone surveillance and automated emergency response capabilities, significantly enhancing ISPS‑compliant perimeter security.

Accompanying the tower inauguration, Mr Ramachandran laid the foundation stone for the expansion of the truck parking terminal near the Customs House. This development is expected to streamline logistics operations and reduce cargo turnaround times.

During his visit, the Secretary commended the port’s adoption of advanced logistics technologies, including automated weighbridges, digital document workflows, e‑kart ticketing, and drone‑based monitoring. He also praised the implementation of automated firefighting systems as a forward‑looking initiative.

Mr Ramachandran toured the multi‑specialty hospital being built under a public‑private partnership—the first of its kind at an Indian major port—highlighting NMPA’s commitment to employee welfare and community development.

In addition, he inspected the international cruise lounge, affirming NMPA’s strategic investment in cruise tourism and modern passenger amenities. His visit included a wharf familiarisation tour via tugboat and a review of operational infrastructure at the Chowgule SBD shipyard in Tannirbhavi, underscoring the port’s role in furthering India’s maritime manufacturing capabilities.

These infrastructure and technological enhancements are closely aligned with India’s Maritime Amritkaal vision to transform ports into world‑class gateways for trade and tourism.

NMPA’s new security tower, logistics automation, truck terminal expansion, healthcare facilities, and cruise amenities collectively mark a significant upgrade in port infrastructure. These measures are designed to boost operational efficiency, enhance safety, support community well‑being, and strengthen Mangalore’s appeal as a maritime and tourist destination.
