Wallenius Sol Commissions South Enabler, a Methanol‑Ready Ro Ro Vessel Pioneering Green Shipping

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, June 11, 2025 — Wallenius Sol, the Swedish roll‑on/roll‑off operator, today announced the delivery of South Enabler, its first methanol‑ready Ro Ro vessel, at Italy’s Visentini Shipyard. The ship, originally ordered by Mann Lines prior to its acquisition by Wallenius Sol earlier this year, departed the yard and passed Gibraltar en route to northern Europe.

At 203.4 metres in length, South Enabler is equipped with two 7,200 kW Wärtsilä main engines capable of running on low‑carbon and conventional fuels. The vessel achieves a service speed of 22 knots and meets Ice Class 1A requirements under RINA classification, enabling year‑round operation in challenging sea conditions.

South Enabler offers two vehicle decks with a total capacity of 197 cars and additional space for high‑and‑heavy cargo. Designed by NAOS Ship & Boat Design and flagged in Italy, the vessel will operate under a five‑year time charter on the Tilbury–Cuxhaven–Turku–Paldiski–Bremerhaven–Tilbury route, replacing ML Freyja to expand Wallenius Sol’s network across Northern and Western Europe.

The launch of South Enabler represents a significant step in Wallenius Sol’s green fleet renewal strategy and underscores growing investor and regulatory pressure for decarbonization in maritime transport. By adopting methanol‑ready propulsion, the company gains flexibility to transition to green methanol as supply sources mature, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
